Finding The Perfect Domain Name

Have you been pounding your head against the wall trying to come up with a great domain name for your website? Don't feel bad, it is getting harder all the time. In the early days of the internet you could of grabbed lots of great domain names. How great would it of been to pick up business.com? Which later sold for a record 7 million! These days it is next to impossible to grab a single word dot com name. Chances are the name you choose will be a combination of words.

The first thing you need to do is try and think of a name that reflects your business or website. Sometimes it is very obvious. If you have a site about water skis then a name like bobswaterskis.com might work. You wouldn't want bobsgolfgifts.com if you site has nothing to do with golf. Start by checking to see if your first choice is available. You might be surprised.

In choosing a domain name your first choice should always be the name with a .com extension. .com names are always the most valuable and always the first thing people try when typing in a domain name. .net and .org are less desirable but can still serve a purpose if the .com name is unavailable. There are now dozens of other extensions from different countries around the world. One of these may work for you if the .com name is not available. Also you don't want a name with hyphens. If your name is bobs-golf-gifts.com, how many customers are you going to loose who type in bobsgolfgifts.com?

The main word in your domain name should be a keyword related to your site. You probably won't be able to have just one keyword for your domain so you will need to add other words to the front and back of it. In the example above our keyword was golf, our second keyword was gifts. Since golfgifts.com was not available we added "bobs" to the front of it.

Make up a list of words you can add to the front and to the back to generate ideas for domain names. They could include things like "e" as in egolfgifts.com or "online" as in golfgiftsonline.com. Once you start putting together a list, you will start to come up with some great combinations and some great domain names. You can also look online for domain name generators that will do it automatically for you. You put in one keyword and it will generate a list of available names.

Once you come up with some great domain names then the next step is to register the name. Today you have many choices where to register. You should be able to register your domain name for under $10 each, Sometimes even less. One site that has a lot to offer including specials on domain names is registerfly.com. Another similar site is godaddy.com. Both of these sites allow you full control over your domain name.

Finding a good domain name is not impossible, it just takes work and a creative mind.
